Overview: 

This is an interactive tool to introduce adding integers. This is a dynamic tool developed by the publishers of College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM).

Description: 

This is a dynamic tool developed by the publishers of College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM).  It is from their website cpm.org.  This tool should be used as a visual introduction to adding integers.  It is suggested that you do not introduce any integer rules prior to this.  If possible, give each student or pair of students a computer with internet access.  

Background information:  

The premise of this lesson is that you have an accrobat who is tightroping across a certain length revine.  Students are given multiple length rope to help span the ravine.  The student can use any rope length as many times a they want.  Their goal is to produce as many combinations as possible.  

Have the students go to this link and observe what they do and say.  Once they feel this is too simple, give then challenges.  Some ideas are have them complete the target length with only five lengths or six lengths, or force them to have to use the negative lengths.  

Learning Outcomes:  

Students will develop an understanding of adding integers and producing zero pairs which will develop in more formal properties of integers for adding and multiplying integers.
