What if no one respected other peoples' space, property or feelings?

Learning Objectives/Student Outcomes: 

Students will understand:

  • how to treat self and others with knowledge and respect.
  • successful group activities need the cooperation of everyone.

Students will know:

  • individual actions can impact a school and community.
  • how to use the "Showdown" (a Kagan cooperative learning strategy).

Students will be able to: 

  • acknowledge the value of personal and other's talents and strengths.
  • determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud.

Preparation: 

Prior to instruction, the teacher needs to...

 

Learning Experiences and Activities: 

In this lesson, the teacher will...

  1. Read the book "Better Than You" by Trudy Ludwig 
  2. Discuss the meaning of the words:  arrogance, pride, vanity and self-esteem.
  3. Teach students the steps for "Showdown."
  4. Ask the discussion questions from the back of "Better Than You".  Students use Showdown to work individually and as a group to answer the questions.
  5. Identify the main idea of the book, use "Showdown" to have students identify supporting details of the main idea.
  6. After identifying the supporting details groups will choose one situation from the book where respect was not shown.
    • Discuss how this was not respectful.
    • Identify how an up-stander could respond in a respectful way. An up-stander is someone who sees the behavior that is not caring and stands-up to help.
    • Discuss how you could respond differently to the situation in a caring way.
    • Consider practicing with a partner how to show caring in this situation. The person who is not showing caring behavior should keep to the situation identified in the book and not improvise.
    • Consider having students write a short response based on how they would respond.

 

Assessment: 

Students are able to work in their cooperative groups to identify the main idea, supporting details, and answer other discussion questions about "Better Than You."
